Guarding Your Voice: The Rise of Deepfake Audio Scams (And How to Protect Yourself)
Imagine getting a call from your grandchild, your spouse, or your closest friend. They sound exactly like themselves, but they’re in a panic—they claim they’ve been in an accident, or their wallet was stolen, and they need you to wire money or send a peer-to-peer payment immediately. It’s a terrifying scenario, and unfortunately, it's becoming a reality for many New Yorkers. Thanks to advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), scammers can now clone a person’s voice using just a few seconds of audio harvested from social media videos or voicemail greetings. At FASNY FCU, we want to make sure our members are equipped with the knowledge to spot these high-tech tricks before they hit their wallets.
How Voice Cloning Works—and What to Watch For
Deepfake voice scams are designed to bypass our natural defenses by exploiting our emotions and our trust. Because the voice on the other end sounds so authentic, it’s easy to panic and bypass your usual caution. Here are the key red flags and best practices to keep in mind:
The Artificial Emergency: Scams always rely on high urgency. If the caller demands
immediate payment via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards to solve a crisis, your
fraud radar should go off.
Establish a Family Password: One of the easiest and most effective defenses is to
establish a unique "safe word" or phrase with your loved ones. If you ever receive a
suspicious or frantic call, ask for the password to verify their identity.
Hang Up and Call Back: If you receive a distressing call from a loved one, resist the
urge to act immediately. Hang up and call that person back directly using a trusted
phone number you have saved in your contacts—not the number that just called you.
Guard Your Audio: Be mindful of what you post online. Scammers only need a short
clip of your voice from a public video (like a TikTok, Reel, or public speech) to create a
convincing clone. Consider tightening your social media privacy settings.
