Traveling Light & Secure: Digital Safety for Convention Season
June in New York is a busy time for the FASNY family. With convention season kicking off and various training events taking place across the state, many of our members are hitting the road. While you're focused on networking, honing your skills, and enjoying the camaraderie, it’s easy to let your digital guard down. At FASNY FCU, we want to make sure your financial and personal data stays as protected as you are on the job. Traveling "light" isn't just about your luggage; it’s about minimizing your digital footprint to keep hackers at bay while you’re away from home.
Staying secure on the go is simpler than you might think. Before you pull out of the station or head to your next seminar, keep these essential digital safety tips in mind:
Stick to Private Connections: Public Wi-Fi at hotels and convention centers is convenient, but it’s rarely secure. If you need to check your accounts or move funds, use your phone’s mobile hotspot or a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your data.
Set Travel Notifications: Use the FASNY FCU Mobile App or give us a call to let us know your travel plans. This prevents your card from being flagged for "unusual activity" when you’re grabbing a meal or filling up the tank in a new town.
Beware of Public Charging Stations: "Juice jacking" is a real threat where hackers use public USB ports to steal data. Stick to your own wall plug adapter or carry a portable power bank.
Lock it Down: Ensure your phone and laptop are password or biometrically protected. If a device is lost during a busy convention day, having "Find My Device" enabled and remote-wipe capabilities can be a lifesaver.
Update Your Apps: Before you leave, make sure your banking and security apps are running the latest versions to ensure you have the most recent protection against vulnerabilities.
No matter where your service takes you this June, remember that your financial peace of mind is our top priority. By taking a few proactive steps now, you can focus on what really matters: the training, the people, and the mission. Safe travels to all our members across New York—we’re proud to be the credit union that supports those who protect our communities!
