Shield Your Savings: Simple Fraud Protection Tips for February
Baby, it’s cold outside! While our New York winter is in full swing and we’re all bundled up against the chill, it’s the perfect time to make sure your finances are just as insulated. At FASNY FCU, we know that our members are the first ones to run toward danger to protect our communities. That’s why we want to return the favor by helping you protect your hard-earned money. With tax season heating up and Valentine’s Day around the corner, scammers are unfortunately working overtime. But don't worry, a little awareness goes a long way.
Stay One Step Ahead with These Tips
You don’t need to be a cybersecurity expert to keep your accounts safe. By staying alert and spotting the red flags early, you can stop fraud in its tracks. Here are the top trends we’re seeing in 2026 and how you can stay safe:
Guard Your Heart (and Wallet): With Valentine's Day here, "romance scams" are on the rise. Be wary of new online relationships that move too fast or ask for money early on. If a new admirer asks you to send crypto or wire funds to "help with an emergency" before you’ve even met in person, that’s a major red flag.
Tax Season Smarts: As we head deeper into tax season, remember that the IRS will never initiate contact with you via text message, email, or social media to demand immediate payment. If you receive a threatening message claiming you owe taxes, do not reply. Hang up or delete the message and contact the IRS directly through their official website.
The "AI" Imposter: Technology is changing, and scammers are now using AI to clone voices. If you get a panicked call from a "grandchild" or "relative" claiming they are in trouble and need money wired immediately, pause. Hang up and call that family member back on their known number to verify it’s really them.
Don't Click That Link: "Smishing" (SMS phishing) is more common than ever. You might get texts looking like they are from FASNY FCU, Amazon, or a delivery service asking you to "verify a transaction" or "reschedule a delivery." Never click the link. Instead, log in to your account directly through the official app or website to check your status.
Check Your Accounts Often: The best defense is a good offense. Log in to your FASNY FCU online banking or mobile app regularly to monitor your transactions. If you see even a small charge you don’t recognize, let us know right away.
