Your Year-End Cybersecurity Checklist

Your Year-End Cybersecurity Checklist

Cyber threats are constantly evolving, which means your defenses must evolve as well. Taking the time to go through this quick, but crucial, checklist will help you identify and close any security gaps, both for your personal accounts and for any business you manage.

Conduct a Digital Security Audit

A security audit doesn't have to be complicated! It's simply taking an inventory and checking the health of your digital assets.

  • Review your accounts: Look at all your online accounts—from social media to shopping to banking. Do you still use them? Delete or deactivate any unused accounts that hold personal information. Less data out there means less risk.

  • Check your permissions: Audit third-party apps and services that have access to your primary accounts (like Google or Facebook). Revoke access for anything you don't recognize or no longer use.

  • Back up your data: Ensure all your critical files, photos, and documents are backed up to a secure cloud service or an external hard drive that is kept offline. If the worst happens, you'll still have your data.

Update Your Passwords and Software

Two of the easiest ways to get hacked are through a weak password or old, unpatched software. The end of the year is the ideal moment for a major refresh.

  • Stronger passwords are a MUST: Commit to using a unique, complex password for every single account, especially financial ones. Use a reputable password manager—they make it easy to create and store these complex passwords securely, so you only have to remember one master password.

  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): This is the single most effective security measure you can take! MFA requires a second form of verification (like a code sent to your phone) in addition to your password. Enable it on every account that offers it.

  • Update everything: Outdated software, operating systems, and apps often have known vulnerabilities that hackers love to exploit. Take a moment to install all pending updates on your computers, phones, tablets, and even your home router. Set automatic updates where you can.

Setting Cybersecurity Goals for 2026

Once you’ve locked down your systems, let's look forward! Your digital security is an ongoing practice, not a one-time fix. Here are some easy-to-keep resolutions for a safer 2026:

  • Think before you click habit: Make a conscious effort to pause before clicking a link or downloading an attachment in an email or text, even if it looks legitimate. Scammers rely on urgency. If something feels off, verify the source directly.

  • Be a smart Wi-Fi user: Resolve to use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when connecting to public Wi-Fi (at a coffee shop or airport). A VPN encrypts your data, keeping it safe from prying eyes on shared networks.

  • Regular data check-ins: Schedule a reminder every quarter to review your financial statements and credit reports for any suspicious activity. This helps you catch potential fraud before it spirals out of control.

The transition into the new year is a great opportunity for a reset in all aspects of your life, including your cybersecurity. By dedicating a little time to audits, updates, and goal-setting now, you’re building a stronger, more resilient digital future. From all of us at FASNY FCU, we wish you a secure and happy new year!
